This is a list of some of the features in the TraCS Location Tool. The TLT fills in the Location Group on a TraCS form.

The TLT is a part of the TraCS installation.  You will not see a separate icon on the desktop.

To launch the TLT Tab to the Map field in the Location group. All map fields are set to auto-open the TLT if the field is blank. If the field is not blank or it did not auto-open click on the Locate button within a TraCS form.

Click on the map to choose where to place the red dot.

Snap to Roadway

Snap to Roadway

The Snap to Roadway option, at the bottom left will default to the checked position.  The marker will snap onto the roads around the dot.  Turn off the checkbox to choose an off-road location.

When you are off the road, clicking locate will bring up options

  • Parking Lot - Only if in a parking lot.

  • Public/Private Property - Most common and if in doubt use this option.

  • Non-Roadway (DNR only) - Only to be used on DNR forms and used most commonly with water based location. NOTE: on any other form you will get validation errors.

  • Click on the map to locate the incident

  • Click on the Measure button at the bottom of the screen or hold down the Ctrl key. 

    • The TLT icon will change to look like an arrow  

  • Click to set the endpoint for your measurement and find the distance from your incident.

  • The distance can also be changed by typing in the distance box or by using the + and – buttons once you have set a measure point. The Cancel Measure button will remove the measure options.

The hand is no longer used to move to different areas on the map.  The mouse scroll button can be used to zoom in and out along with the buttons shown below. Also you can move the map in any direction via left click and hold and then moving the mouse.

  • Incidents can be located by latitude and longitude coordinates.

  • Click on the ellipses for either latitude or longitude to open the Enter Coordinates Window.

  • Type in the appropriate coordinates and click OK to place the pointer.

Jump to Current GPS Location

If you have GPS enabled, the TLT will automatically position the map to your current location.  If you move your vehicle while the TLT is open, you can update your current position on the map by clicking on the Current Location button.

Click the Locate button to import the TLT information into TraCS. The Location button is grayed out, you should see this text Zoom in to use this location toward the top of the screen you will have to zoom in until the message goes away.

Sometimes the GPS coordinates fail to save, when that happens the map looks like it is in the middle of nowhere. The coordinates are somewhere in the plains states.

Zoom out until you see Wisconsin then use the

Use the zoom to selection to get back to your municipality. The next time the TLT will save the coordinates.

Sometimes when inputting a location into a TraCS form, you may need to manually edit some or all the fields in the Location group. You can use the Override feature to open up the location fields that normally would only be filled in by what you select in the TLT.

By clicking Edit/New on the Map field, you can type “Override”. Tabbing to the next field will open the Location group up to edit. The override feature should only be used in circumstances that the TLT is not providing you what you need.
