Task 2.1: Back Up Critical Files
Hard drives can and do fail! Avoid a catastrophic loss of your TraCS data by performing nightly backups.
The most important directory to backup is the settings directory. It is found on your TraCS network share which would be your server install C:\programdata\TraCS\Settings on your IIS server if you are Web Services. This directory contains all the agency specific settings in TraCS and needs to be recoverable.

You can configure Windows to display hidden folders like the Application Data folder.
Press the Windows key and type Control Panel. Click Control Panel and select Appearance and Personalization, and then click Folder Options. click the View tab. Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files, folders, and drives, and then click OK.
All your SQL databases need to be backed up. Some are more critical than others
tracs_data – Critical data and should be backed up nightly. This contains all the form data in TraCS.
tracs_custom – Back up is necessary this contains all the agency tables drop down lists. This is where your ordinances are stored. You can also find a copy of this on all your field units in c:\programdata\tracs\dbdata\custom.mdb
tracs_users – Backup is necessary this contains all the credentials to log into TraCS.
tracs_log – Contains logs of actions in TraCS.
tracs_support – Backup is not needed as this database will get rebuilt upon running the WIPack.
Store your backups in a safe place. Consider offsite storage and redundant copies as floods and fires do happen! Three copies of backups for each database are recommended .
