Task 2.1: Back Up Critical Files


Hard drives can and do fail!  Avoid a catastrophic loss of your TraCS data by performing nightly backups.

The most important directory to backup is the settings directory. It is found on your TraCS network share which would be your server install C:\programdata\TraCS\Settings on your IIS server if you are Web Services. This directory contains all the agency specific settings in TraCS and needs to be recoverable.

You can configure Windows to display hidden folders like the Application Data folder.

Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button, expand the Windows System folder, choose Control Panel, select Appearance and Personalization, and then click Folder Options. click the View tab.  Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files, folders, and drives, and then click OK.

All your SQL databases need to be backed up. Some are more critical than others

Store your backups in a safe place.  Consider offsite storage and redundant copies as floods and fires do happen! Three copies of backups are recommended.
